Garmin Forerunner 970
The current Forerunner flagship: brilliant training tools and GPS, tempered by battery defaults and a steep ask.
Our scores
| Overall | 8.6 / 10 |
|---|---|
| GPS accuracy | 9.4 |
| Battery | 7.6 |
| Training features | 9.6 |
| Build | 9 |

Land GPS and optical HR lead the class in independent tests. Training depth (Impact Load, Coach, maps, triathlon tools) is unmatched, but always-on AMOLED defaults punish battery and the $750 MSRP hurts value.
Meta-review
Consensus strengths
- Best-in-class land GPS and Elevate Gen5 optical HR in third-party testing
- Deepest runner/triathlon software stack with maps, music, Pay, flashlight, speaker/mic
- Frequent platform updates and broad sensor support (ANT+/BT)
Consensus weaknesses
- Always-on display at default brightness drains far faster than older Forerunners
- Open-water GPS still needs firmware polish after pauses
- Price jumped hard versus the 965 era
Who it's for
Serious runners and triathletes who want Garmin’s full maps-and-metrics stack in a lighter plastic/titanium Forerunner and will manage brightness for battery.
